Since 1998, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has organized the International Conference on Topical Issues in Nuclear Installation Safety (TIC). These conferences provide a platform for discussing current practices and challenges in nuclear installation safety, fostering collaboration among regulators, plant designers, operators, and other stakeholders.
Over the years, TIC conferences have evolved to address pressing issues, from continuous safety improvement to the safety of advanced nuclear power plants (NPPs). Recent conferences have focused on the safety of advanced reactor designs, including small modular reactors (SMRs) and next-generation NPPs. TIC2022 highlighted the importance of strengthening the safety of innovative reactor designs, aligning with the growing interest in advanced reactors.
Insights from past conferences have shaped the IAEA's efforts to promote and enhance nuclear safety standards globally. The upcoming TIC conference, titled "International Conference on Topical Issues in Nuclear Installation Safety: Learning from the Past to Accelerate the Future," will be held in Vienna from 29 June to 3 July 2026. This event aims to leverage past lessons to drive future advancements in nuclear installation safety for both operating and new types of designs.
