Uzbekistan, like most of the Republics of the Former Soviet Union, is a country in transition. However, unlike some other republics it has substantial export earnings though the export of cotton and gold. During September 1996 the government of Uzbekistan stopped the free conversion of the currency. This action led to enormous difficulties for Uzbekistan companies looking to import goods. However, effective October 15, 2003 Uzbekistan signed article 8 of the IMF charter guaranteeing free currency convertibility.
