The theme for the 2015 ANCOLD Conference in Brisbane examines the contemporary challenges faced with planning new dams and dam upgrades, design, construction, operation and maintenance and risk assessment.'In an era of significant fiscal restraint and the challenges associated with environmental and social issues, the planning and management of water resources, especially major works such as dams, often appears to be "against the odds'.'Regardless of the context, the probabilities of success are improved with effective engagement from the outset between a wide range of professionals and stakeholder interest groups. The conference itself is one important means of facilitating engagement between professionals.
