Sooner or later, any mine will come to the end of its operative life. Regardless how extended are the ore reserves, they will always be finite. That makes mining different from any other activity. That also means that closure should be planned from a very early stage of the project, even before the mine design.
The focus of Planning for Closure 2016, the First International Congress on Planning for Closure of Mining Operations, is what will come after the closure is a central question that should guide the whole project definition and design. More than designing the closure, the whole mining operation should be designed for the closure, taking into account the not everything will come to the end with the mine closure.
The future use of the land and the future of communities should be the main drivers of the planning. These and other related topics will be addressed during the Planning for Closure 2016 Congress.
