Indonesia is the world's third largest exporter of thermal coal. The number of active mines in Indonesia has grown massively in the past 10 years from 40 mines to over 100, with many more prospective mines.
Kalimantan is the largest coal producing region with East Kalimantan being the most established mining area in Indonesia, accounting for 65% of the country's coal production in 2010.
