Porous materials have accompanied Humankind since ancient times, witnessing every endeavour towards Civilisation. Used in day-to-day utensils, shelter or protection, zeolites, clays and other natural porous solids, formed the basis for pottery, weapons and construction. More recently, they have also been used as adsorbents and catalysts in the ultimate end of producing energy in the form of fuels for heating and transportation. Such concept led us to the 2016 International Zeolite Conference theme, a recognition of the need to investigate and discuss the opportunities of using porous materials aiming at obtaining sustainable production means, clean environment, continuous supply of healthy water and air, always maintaining the level of comfort and sanity to which we are accustomed.
