Geosynthetics have been increasingly used worldwide for more than four decades in various applications in civil works. In that period they have progressed both in production technology, new polymer materials, performance prediction and design and construction procedures, as much in modeling and analysis of their interaction with natural soils in various civil engineering applications.
They have evolved from materials that originally came from the textile or upholstery, to materials that have their own new nomenclature, design procedures and specific laboratory testing. Among its advantages in a world facing environmental challenges, its contribution to the reduction of use volumes of natural borrow materials'(such as gravel and clay), reduction in the needs of earthwork and construction deadlines, improvements in land use in infrastructure, transport and urban projects, and also in the recovery of river or sea areas or foundations of structures on soft soils.
Throughout its development, great contribution has been obtained from disciplines such as chemical engineering and materials science, hydraulic engineering, structural engineering and geotechnical engineering, which play an important role and participation in their increasing use.
