Welcome to the website of the ESBES 2026 Symposium. We are proud to have the ESBES return to the beautiful city of Delft, renowned for its bio(techno)logical history, ranging from the discovery of microbes by van Leeuwenhoek all the way to the multifacetted biotechnology campus Planet B.io today. Delft previously hosted the 4th ESBES Symposium in 2002; the next edition of the ESBES Symposium will take place from 30.11 until 02.12.2026.
After a successful ESBES 2024 in Copenhagen, we hope to welcome many familiar faces as well as new members to the community in Delft to experience Biochemical Engineering Science in a Dutch setting. The venue of the conference will be the Aula at the TU Delft, central to the TU Delft campus, and on walking distance from the cozy city center. The theme of ESBES 2026 is "Biomanufacturing 4.0", focusing on the use of modern (digital) tools for the production of biologicals, food, and bioproducts.
The symposium will host both special sessions related to the theme of the symposium, and sessions related to themes covered by the ESBES sections. Related to the topic, there will be special attention for the use of computer models to design, simulate and control biomanufacturing processes, Process Analytical Technology (PAT), Machine Learning (ML), Digital Twins, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, etcetera. The topics covered by the ESBES sections include: Biocatalysis; Bioenergy and Bioeconomy; Bioreactor Performance; Downstream Processing; Education; Food Bioprocess; Metabolic Engineering and System Biology; Microalgae Bioengineering; Modelling, Monitoring, Measurement & Control; Regenerative Medicine Manufacturing. To cover the lively field of biotechnology for food production, applications related to Cellular Agriculture, including precision fermentation and cell cultures for food production, are also highlighted.
