NAMPO Harvest Day 2012

Closed
the NAMPO Agricultural Trade Show
Dates: Tuesday, May 15, 2012 - Friday, May 18, 2012
Venue: NAMPO PARK, Bothaville, South Africa
One of the largest privately organised and owned exhibitions in the world and the largest show of agricultural machinery and livestock in the southern hemisphere takes place annually out-side Bothaville in the Free State, Republic of South Africa.

Organised by Grain South Africa (GSA), it provides a unique opportunity to all manufacturers and distributors of agri-cultural machinery, products and services to exhibit as well as demonstrate their vast range of products to their targeted customers - the farmers of South Africa.

Controlled practical demonstrations of machinery and implements are an unique feature of the Show which allows farmers to view demonstrations of an exhaustive range of machinery and implements, establish their performance and effectiveness and use this knowledge for product purchases in future.

The first NAMPO Agricultural Show dates back to 1967. The main object of the show was for farmers to be able to compare farming products of different manufacturers on one site. The first show took place on the farm Donkerhoek outside Bloemfontein and was attended by 200 farmers. From there it moved to various farms until its size and growth demanded a permanent home. This was established in 1974 on a venue outside Bothaville, on what is known today as NAMPO Park.

The 1974 Harvest Day attracted 32 exhibitors on an area of 8 hectares, whilst practical demonstrations took place on a 30 hectare area.

Today the NAMPO Agricultural Trade Show draws more than 500 exhibitors, spread over 24 hectares and the demonstration area covers 80 hectares.

The NAMPO Agricultural Trade Show is dynamic. It adapts to the ever-changing needs of farmers and exhibitors and, while initially targeted only at maize farmers, today embraces all farmers.

NAMPO 2011 sets the tone once again
'
NAMPO's Harvest Day 2011 succeeded in its objective of supporting agricultural producers on their way to sustainability by once again presenting a variety of exhibitions of a high standard at a single venue.

The attendance figure for the four days was 73 552, which is higher than last year's figure. Wednesday 18 May - which was a public holiday owing to the municipal elections - saw a record number of visitors for a single day, while the other days showed lower attendance than last year.

Although the parking area had been enlarged and additional entrance points set up in order to facilitate the admission of visitors on the Wednesday, the two available routes to NAMPO Park could not handle the volume of traffic. "In spite of the abnormally high number of visitors on the Wednesday, the NAMPO Park grounds and facilities could cope," said Mr Jub Jubelius, Chairman of the NAMPO Harvest Day Committee.'He apologised for the inconvenience caused by the traffic congestion and said that further talks would be held with the relevant authorities to address the problem.

"We receive many compliments on the Harvest Day as a whole - many of them on the high standard of the exhibitions. As may be expected, the general feedback from exhibitors is also positive about the Harvest Day as a business opportunity," he added.

Interest in the Harvest Day from international exhibitors, as individuals or as part of a government initiative, is still growing. The participation of a group of exhibitors from the US and Argentina achieved permanence this year, while Germany and Canada have already indicated that they intend becoming involved. The number of visiting groups from foreign countries, especially from Africa, also grows by the year.

Next year's NAMPO Harvest Day will take place from Tuesday 15 to Friday 18 May.

Grain South Africa

As the Show is owned by Grain South Africa members, its continued existence depends on meeting the needs of these farmers first and foremost.

A unique feature of the NAMPO Agricultural Trade Show is the absence of paid officials as the organisation is operated by the farmers for their fellow farmers. The concept manifests itself through a system of committees and subcommittees involving the members in all phases of planning and execution. During the duration of the Show all tasks on the Showground are carried out by Grain South Africa members, their wives and friends of the Organisation.
